Tongkat ali buyer's guide: 7 products compared on mg per day, MAL number, halal and price, with an MFormula box and sachet

Best Tongkat Ali in Malaysia (2026): 7 Products Compared on Dose, Registration, Halal and Price per Day

MEN'S HEALTH · BUYER'S GUIDE · MALAYSIA 2026

Every tongkat ali page in Malaysia says its product is the best. None of them shows the numbers side by side. So we did: seven products you can actually buy here, compared on how much tongkat ali you get per day, how each one is registered or certified, whether it is halal, and what it costs per day.

The short answer

There is no single best tongkat ali, because the products are built for different people. Pick by what you want:

Who wrote this and why you should know: MFormula makes one of the seven products below. We have not ranked it number one, we show its price per day next to everyone else's, and we earn nothing from the other six. Every number comes from the retailer or brand page linked in the Sources section, checked on 13 October 2026. If a figure changes, tell us and we will correct it.

How we compared

Four numbers, same for every product

Marketing copy is easy to write. Numbers are harder to argue with. For each product we recorded:

  • Tongkat ali per day — milligrams of extract (or root) you get if you follow the label. Where a label says 1–2 doses, we show the range.
  • How it is regulated — a MAL number from the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) for supplements and traditional products, or, for drinks regulated as food, the factory's Ministry of Health (KKM) certifications.
  • Halal status — as shown on the brand's official page.
  • Price per day — the retail price we saw on 13 October 2026 divided by the number of days the pack lasts at the label dose.

We only included products whose official or retailer page lists the actual ingredient amounts. Products that list no amounts and no registration number were left out, because you cannot compare what you cannot see.

Read the table right

Three things the numbers tell you

  • 'Tongkat ali' on the front means very different amounts inside. Per day, the spread runs from 50 mg (Thomson Xbido at one tablet) to 400 mg (Duoleaf at two). The only product here with trials on its exact extract, Nu-Prep 100, is built around 200 mg a day.
  • Registration tells you the category, not the quality. Capsules and tablets carry a MAL number whose category letter is T (natural / traditional product). Drinks such as MFormula and Alicafé are regulated as food, so they have no MAL number; what you check instead is the factory's KKM GMP and MeSTI certificates and the halal certificate.
  • Price per box is misleading. A RM43 pack that lasts 15 days and a RM269 box that lasts 30 days are closer than they look. Compare per day, and compare what else is in the dose.

The products

Each product, honestly

Ordered by type — single-ingredient capsule first, then combination capsules and tablets, then drinks. Not ranked.

Best for: the trial-tested dose, single ingredient

1. Nu-Prep 100 (Physta tongkat ali)

The Malaysian benchmark. Each capsule holds 100 mg of Physta, a water-soluble freeze-dried tongkat ali extract made by Biotropics Malaysia, a Khazanah subsidiary. Two capsules a day gives the 200 mg used in the published trials.

Dose
2 capsules a day = 200 mg Physta extract
Registration
Brand states KKM approval and a KKLIU advertising approval (2511, exp 31 Dec 2027). We could not find the MAL number on the pages we checked.
Halal
Brand states JAKIM halal
Price seen
RM189.90 for 2 × 60 capsules at BIG and Caring; RM193 at Alpro — about RM3.17 a day
Where
Watsons, Guardian, BIG, Caring, Alpro and the brand's Shopee, Lazada and TikTok shops

Why it made the list

  • Only product on this list whose exact extract has randomised controlled trials: 200 mg a day for 12 weeks raised testosterone and reduced fatigue in men aged 50–70 with low testosterone (Chinnappan 2021), and lowered cortisol in stressed adults over 4 weeks (Talbott 2013).
  • Single ingredient, so you know exactly what you are taking.

Good to know

  • Both trials were funded by the manufacturer and done in men with low testosterone or high stress, not healthy men.
  • Capsules twice a day; nothing for circulation, stress or energy beyond the tongkat ali itself.

Choose this if: you want one well-studied ingredient at the studied dose and you are happy taking capsules.

Best for: most tongkat ali per ringgit

2. Duoleaf Tongkat Ali Plus Vegecapsule

A budget combination capsule sold through AA Pharmacy. 200 mg of tongkat ali root extract per capsule, taken twice a day, is the highest daily amount in this comparison — at the lowest price per day among the capsules.

Dose
1 capsule twice daily = 400 mg extract, plus maca 200 mg and tribulus 200 mg
Registration
MAL24066108TC — traditional product, contract-manufactured
Halal
Not stated on the retailer page we checked
Price seen
RM43.00 for 30 capsules at AA Pharmacy — about RM2.87 a day; a pack lasts 15 days

Why it made the list

  • Highest tongkat ali per day here, and the cheapest per day of the capsules.
  • Registered with NPRA as a traditional product.

Good to know

  • The extract ratio is not stated, so 200 mg here is not directly comparable to 200 mg of Physta.
  • Small 15-day pack; the manufacturer is not named on the page.

Choose this if: you want to try tongkat ali cheaply and do not mind a two-week pack.

Best for: pharmacy-brand combo with maca, vegan

3. VitaHealth Tongkat Ali Plus

From a long-established Malaysian pharmacy brand. Each vegetable capsule pairs 70 mg of tongkat ali root extract with maca, black seed and ginger. The label allows one or two capsules twice a day, so the daily tongkat ali ranges from 140 mg to 280 mg — and the price per day doubles with it.

Dose
1–2 capsules twice daily = 140–280 mg extract, plus maca 200–400 mg
Registration
MAL21026056TC — traditional product, contract-manufactured
Halal
Yes, and vegan (official page)
Price seen
RM103.90 for 60 capsules at BIG and Caring (RM162.80 on the official site) — about RM3.46–6.93 a day

Why it made the list

  • Widely stocked pharmacy brand with the full ingredient amounts published.
  • Vegan capsule; maca and ginger in the same dose.

Good to know

  • Only 70 mg of tongkat ali per capsule — at the lower dose you get less than most products here.
  • Up to four capsules a day to reach the top of the range, which pushes the daily cost close to RM7.

Choose this if: you prefer a familiar pharmacy brand and want maca in the same capsule.

Best for: once-a-day multi-herb tablet where tongkat ali is a minor part

4. VitaHealth Stami Man

A five-herb tablet led by green oats and sea buckthorn. Tongkat ali root is 100 mg of a 1,212 mg tablet, and the page does not say whether it is an extract. Cheapest per day of the registered products if you take one tablet.

Dose
1–2 tablets a day = 100–200 mg tongkat ali root
Registration
MAL15015075TCR — traditional product
Halal
Yes, and vegan (official page)
Price seen
RM102.90 for 60 tablets at Caring — about RM1.72–3.43 a day

Why it made the list

  • One tablet a day; the lowest per-day cost of the registered products.
  • Full amounts published; halal and vegan.

Good to know

  • Tongkat ali is a minor ingredient, and it is listed as 'root', not extract.
  • No published trial on the product or its blend.

Choose this if: you want a general 'stamina' tablet and tongkat ali is not your main reason for buying.

Best for: tongkat ali + red ginseng + ginkgo in one tablet (with a caution)

5. Thomson Xbido

The only product here that combines tongkat ali and red ginseng in a registered tablet — but at 50 mg each, both are small. Most of the tablet is ginkgo biloba (262.5 mg), which carries a bleeding-risk warning on the listing.

Dose
1–2 tablets a day = 50–100 mg tongkat ali extract and 50–100 mg red ginseng extract
Registration
MAL23016145T — traditional product
Halal
Yes (listing)
Price seen
RM85.00 for 30 tablets at AA Pharmacy — about RM2.83–5.67 a day
Warning
Ginkgo may increase bleeding tendency (stated on the listing)

Why it made the list

  • Three well-known herbs in one registered tablet.
  • Amounts published.

Good to know

  • Lowest tongkat ali per dose on this list.
  • The ginkgo warning matters if you take blood thinners or have surgery planned — ask a pharmacist first.
  • Labelled for energy and general health rather than men's health specifically.

Choose this if: you specifically want ginkgo as well, and a pharmacist has said it is fine for you.

Best for: four herbs in one ready-to-drink sachet, no capsules — our product

6. MFormula

Full disclosure: this is ours. MFormula is a 10 g ready-to-drink sachet made in Serendah, Selangor, that puts Malaysian tongkat ali, Korean red ginseng, Peruvian maca and Indian ashwagandha in one drink, with L-arginine and zinc. You tear it open and drink it after a meal — no capsules, no mixing. It is also the only ready-to-drink format in this comparison, which is why we built this list in the first place.

Dose
1–2 sachets a day after meals. The ingredient list shows tongkat ali extract at 1.5% of the sachet — about 150 mg per sachet, so 150–300 mg a day — with red ginseng ≈60 mg, maca extract ≈100 mg and L-arginine ≈670 mg per sachet. Ashwagandha and zinc amounts are not stated on the label.
Registration
A functional food regulated under the Food Act 1983, so no MAL number. Made by Orient Biotech Sdn Bhd in a factory holding KKM GMP (GM0623016-0/1) and MeSTI (ME0124004-0/1) certification; the manufacturer is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Halal
JAKIM/JAIS certificate JAKIM.700-2/3/1 011-08/2021, valid to 15 Aug 2028
Price seen
RM269 for 30 sachets on mformulamy.com (RM8.97 a day at one sachet; about RM6 a day on the multi-box bundles); RM99 for 10 sachets at Watsons
Where
mformulamy.com, 200+ Watsons stores and pharmacies, official Shopee and Lazada stores

Why it made the list

  • Four herbs plus L-arginine and zinc in one dose, in a format people actually keep taking — nothing to swallow or mix.
  • Made in Malaysia in a KKM GMP and MeSTI certified factory; JAKIM halal; every certificate is published with its number and expiry on our Safety & Quality page.
  • Sold in major pharmacy chains, so you can buy it over the counter rather than from an unknown online seller.
  • 60-day satisfaction guarantee and discreet packaging.

Good to know

  • The most expensive per day on this list at the single-box price. Multi-box bundles bring it to about RM6 a day.
  • No clinical trial on the product itself (true of everything here except Nu-Prep). The tongkat ali amount sits between the capsule products, not above them.
  • Sweetened with honey, so it is not sugar-free. Not for people with G6PD deficiency, within 3 months of surgery, or during pregnancy; and because it contains L-arginine, not for anyone who has had a heart attack unless their doctor agrees.

Choose this if: you have tried capsules before and stopped, you want tongkat ali, ginseng, maca and ashwagandha together, and you would rather buy from a pharmacy shelf than a marketplace.

Best for: coffee drinkers — this is coffee, not a supplement

7. Alicafé Tongkat Ali & Ginseng Original

The most familiar tongkat ali product in the country is an instant coffee. Power Root does not publish how much tongkat ali or ginseng is in a sachet, so there is no dose to compare. It is on this list because many men count it as their 'tongkat ali', and it is worth knowing what you are — and are not — getting.

Dose
Not disclosed
Registration
Food; no MAL number
Halal
Halal logo on the official page
Price seen
RM20.25 for 18 × 30 g sachets at BIG and Caring — about RM1.13 a sachet

Why it made the list

  • Cheapest item here and sold everywhere.
  • Halal; it is a pleasant coffee.

Good to know

  • No published herb amounts, so it cannot be compared with the supplements above.
  • Contains caffeine and creamer; the sugar content is not published on the pages we checked.

Choose this if: you want a coffee and like the taste. If you want a measured dose of tongkat ali, pick something else on this list.

Evidence

What tongkat ali can and cannot do, according to the research

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is the best-studied Malaysian herb, but the studies are smaller and shorter than the marketing suggests. Three findings are worth knowing before you buy:

  • Testosterone: a 2022 meta-analysis of nine studies (five of them randomised trials) found a significant rise in total testosterone overall. In the subgroup of healthy men the change was not significant; in men with low testosterone it was.
  • Fatigue and stress: 200 mg a day of the Physta extract reduced fatigue over 12 weeks in men aged 50–70 with low testosterone. In a separate 4-week trial in stressed adults, the same dose lowered salivary cortisol by 16% and improved mood scores, but did not change fatigue or vigour. Both trials were funded by the extract's maker.
  • Ginseng, which several products here add: a 2021 Cochrane review of nine trials concluded ginseng may have only trivial effects on erectile function. For fatigue, a 2023 pooled analysis of 19 trials found no overall effect, with small benefits in two subgroups — general fatigue, and multi-herb formulas that contain ginseng. Ginseng's traditional use is for energy, and that is how MFormula positions it.

Our reading: tongkat ali is a reasonable choice for men who feel run down, especially past 40, taken daily for at least 8–12 weeks at the label dose. It is not a drug and does not act like one.

Safety

Who should not take it, and the real risk

The trials we cite reported few side effects at the doses used; our own customer guidance notes that a few people feel restless or sleep less well at first — if so, take it earlier in the day. We do not recommend MFormula for people with G6PD deficiency, within three months of surgery, or during pregnancy, and the same caution is sensible for any tongkat ali product. If you take prescription medicines, especially blood thinners, check with your pharmacist. Products that add L-arginine — MFormula is one — are not recommended for anyone who has had a heart attack, a warning Malaysia's NPRA has required on arginine supplements since 2006.

Two facts the marketing never mentions. In 2021 the European Food Safety Authority said it could not establish the safety of a standardised tongkat ali root extract at up to 200 mg a day, because two laboratory genotoxicity tests came back positive, so the extract did not get a favourable novel-food opinion in the EU; Malaysia regulates tongkat ali as a natural product or food. And a 2006 survey found 26 of 100 tongkat ali hitam preparations bought in Malaysia exceeded the mercury limit. Neither changes the practical advice: take the label dose, not more, and buy registered products or products from a KKM-certified factory.

The bigger risk is not the herb. It is 'herbal' products of unknown origin that turn out to contain hidden prescription drugs. NPRA has cancelled registered products for this — two Nan Bao capsules in 2019 contained sildenafil and tadalafil — and a 2020 Ministry of Health reply to Parliament reported that 2.5% of food samples tested in 2019–2020, including health foods, contained scheduled poisons. Every item in this comparison is sold through licensed pharmacies and lists its ingredients; the registered ones carry a MAL number and the food products name their manufacturer. Buy from those channels, not from an unusually cheap listing — the Ministry of Health's advice is to avoid overseas websites and social-media sellers altogether.

Checklist

Five things to check on any tongkat ali label

  1. Milligrams of extract per day. 'Root powder' and 'extract' are not the same; neither is 'contains tongkat ali' with no number.
  2. A MAL number for capsules and tablets, or KKM factory certificates for drinks. The letter after the digits tells you the category: T for traditional products, N for health supplements.
  3. A halal certificate you can see, not just a logo.
  4. Price per day, worked out from the label dose, not price per box.
  5. A named manufacturer and a Malaysian address. If you cannot find who made it, do not put it in your body.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which tongkat ali is the best in Malaysia?

It depends on what you want. For a single ingredient at the clinically tested dose, Nu-Prep 100 (200 mg Physta a day). For the most tongkat ali per ringgit, Duoleaf. For tongkat ali, ginseng, maca and ashwagandha together in a ready-to-drink sachet, MFormula — which we make. No product on this list has been shown to beat the others in a head-to-head trial.

What should I look for when buying tongkat ali in Malaysia?

Four things: the milligrams of extract per day, a MAL registration number (capsules and tablets) or KKM GMP and MeSTI factory certification (drinks regulated as food), a halal certificate you can check, and the price per day at the label dose. If a product publishes none of these, skip it.

Which tongkat ali should I avoid?

Anything that does not list ingredient amounts or a manufacturer, anything promising 'instant' or 'guaranteed' results, and anything sold far below the usual price on marketplaces. NPRA has repeatedly found so-called herbal men's products adulterated with prescription drugs. Stick to licensed pharmacies and official brand stores.

Is Malaysian tongkat ali the best?

Tongkat ali is native to Malaysia, and the most-studied extract (Physta) is Malaysian, so Malaysia has the most-studied extract and a domestic supply chain. But origin alone does not make a product good — the extract amount, the factory and the certification matter more. MFormula uses Malaysian tongkat ali and is made in Selangor.

How much tongkat ali should I take a day?

The Physta trials used 200 mg of extract a day (one also tested 100 mg). Malaysian products in this comparison give between 50 mg and 400 mg a day at the label dose. Take what the label says, not more; long-term use at high amounts has not been well studied.

Capsule, tablet, sachet or coffee — which format is best?

The best format is the one you will still be taking in week eight, because the trials that showed benefits ran for 4–12 weeks of daily use. Capsules are precise and cheap. Ready-to-drink sachets such as MFormula cost more per day but need no swallowing or mixing and combine several herbs. Tongkat ali coffee does not publish a dose, so treat it as coffee.

Where can I buy genuine tongkat ali in Kuala Lumpur or elsewhere in Malaysia?

All seven products here are sold in licensed pharmacy chains such as Watsons, Guardian, BIG, Caring, AA and Alpro, or on the brands' official Shopee and Lazada stores. MFormula is in 200+ Watsons stores and pharmacies; use our store locator to find the nearest one.

Does tongkat ali coffee work?

Nobody can say, because the amount of tongkat ali in a sachet is not published. What it reliably contains is caffeine. If you enjoy it, drink it as coffee; do not count it as your tongkat ali dose.

Can I take tongkat ali together with ginseng?

Yes — one registered product here (Thomson Xbido) combines them, and MFormula combines both with maca and ashwagandha. Ginseng's traditional use is for energy; a 2021 Cochrane review found only trivial effects on erectile function, so do not buy the combination for that reason. If either herb affects your sleep, take it earlier in the day.

Is tongkat ali halal?

The plant is halal; the question is the product. VitaHealth and Alicafé show halal on their official pages, Thomson on its pharmacy listing, MFormula publishes its JAKIM/JAIS certificate, and Nu-Prep states JAKIM halal. Duoleaf's page did not state it when we checked. MFormula's JAKIM/JAIS certificate number and expiry are published on our Safety & Quality page.
